Re: Synthetic oil and OEMs
AFAIK the Corvette LT1 and LT5 engines, and Porsche engines are factory
filled with Mobil 1. According to Mobil the idea that an engine needs
non-synthetic to run-in does not apply to most modern engines.
I'm not an expert in this area but it would seem to me that it is
indisputable that an engine will not last forever. Therefore there must
be some wear in the engine as mileage increases. Modern engines and
modern dino are so good that extremely high mileages are possible as
long as basic care is good - i.e. gentle when cold and regular oil and
filter changes.
Therefore there only two reasons I can see for using synthetic.
Firstly, if you anticipate running the car to a very high mileage.
Secondly, if you are an enthusiast who loves cars and whose car is only
just below your closest human love and you want the very best in the world
for it. I believe that a top synthetic provides this and I feel better
with it in my engine and the extra cost is peanuts compared to the overall
costs of running a car.
OK, so its an emotional choice, but its not my first one in relation
to cars.
