Andrew,

You could have a number of things going on.  We really need more
infomation to go on with this one I think.  If it always happens
at 4K rpm, then you have a bad sensor or wire. (Check the air
temp sensor leads on the intake manifold first).  If it happens
at a particular boost level, you could have a bad pressure sensor.
Not common, but I've heard of one.  Mostly, you haven't told us if
it is a hard cutout (I assumed so) that causes a bid drvetrain shudder,
or if it's more like some gradual fuel starvation type thing.
