This is a easy one Peter......

The Relay is pulling just enough load that the Headlight out autocheck 
circut is seeing a out-of-balance condition.  The solution either run 
relays on each lamp (Solution on my car) or just run another length of 
wire from the relay to the unconnected headlight.
