Re: Spark Plugs
All this talk about spark plugs???!!!?
If you own a "stock" or near stock engine, then run what is called for
from the manufact. Those "high dollar" plugs only are required in the
"high dollar motors" Namely TURBO's and "Modified" engines!!
Your wasten your money running "exotic" plugs in a stock motor,
especially if you run cheap gas too!!!
The main reason the "Tri- electrode" plugs are around is that the
tri-electrode design reduces errosion considerably!! Therefore they last
longer than regular plugs! Especially if you drive the freeways, ALOT!
The "K-mart special" Platinums, have a very small electrode, that
errodes very quickly, and in its vertical position, increases the gap,
therefore increasing the voltage and the errosion! These plugs also
have a lower "arc-over" voltage requirement, and for "neglected"
(older) ignition systems give you a false sence of the true condition of
your ignition. They can sometimes "mask" problems with a worn ignition!
What is most important in an ignition system is "Voltage" and the means
by which it travels from battery to the coil to the plugs. Each piece of
this system plays an important part, and effects the other parts as a
whole! The amount of resistance is a key factor!
Also fuel, combustion, compression, and design of an engine all effect
how a spark plug will operate in its enviroment.
I run the .99 cent Bosch silvers at .052 gap, with a modified 60,000
volt ignition, 10.5-1 compression, Schrick 276 cam in a
"big valve head", and they do just fine.
Main reason I buy'em, at .99 pennies, I can get 10 for the price of one
Platin! Plus the higher "non resistored" voltage ignition I run,
makes ANY plug errode quicker than a "stock" system!
Just my .02 cents... M
