91TQ 20V Brakes

My 1991 TQ 20V has developed a front-end shimmy when I apply the brakes. 
 My mechanic says the rotors are warped which I suspected, but he also 
says that Audi actually recommends that the entire front brake assembly 
be replaced because of all the problems they have had.  He says that 
will run about $2,000; however, he says that the brake assembly from a 
'90 or '91 non-20V or non-V8 will do the job.  Before I begin searching 
wrecking yards, I just would like a reality check.  Has anyone had 
experience with this?
