Barry:
Get a decent lite, a long screwdriver, kneel in front of car, slightly towards the 
drive side and look upwards trough the grill openings, you will see the plate and screw 
where the end of the cable was attached ( it may still be there attached but broken ) 
push the plate towards the driver side... that should pop open the hood to the safety 
catch.. the rest you know.
In view of your luck I recommend some kind of cure or sacrificial dance.... :-)
