All:
Was driving by a dealership this weekend in Boulder, and noticed this
beige wagon in the used car section. There were some other 200's on
the lot, so I assume this was the same. Closer inspection showed that
it looked like a 200 series wagon. It had the UFO brakes, was a
Quattro but did not have any badges. Was it a 200CS(T)QW? Is there
such a beast?
On the subject of UFO brakes, has anyone looked at or done a
conversion to regular brakes, and is it worth it?

I am in the middle of replacing the blower motor in my 200 qw. I have read the
"5000 blower" and "blower motor" faqs in the archives, and am wondering if
there is anything differenet about the 200 hvac system (compared to the 5000)
that I should know about.
In is a very frustrating design. It would have cost little to nothing more to
mount the blower in a clam-shell that splits in a horizontal plane, which
would have allowed one to remove the blower motor w/o removing the entire
guts of the hvac system. Thats the way its done by at least one of the other
german car mfgs. Grrrrrr.
Any suggestions from those who have been there?
Thanks!

can not get the car to not stumble over 1.2 bar. I took it for another
drive and put my foot down hard at 60 MPH and I did see 1.4 bar but it was
stumbling and running like sh*t. As soon as I eased off the throttle, got
to about half throttle or less. The car picked up like regular. Although
not full boost acceleration. I am lost without a Bentley. I will try to
pinch off the hose to the ECU and see if I get more power. Hopefully I wont
make matters worse.
..
That sounds exactly like what my car did until I replaced the spark
plugs. Had done the cap and wires ($350 YOW!) to no effect. Pulled
the plugs and found some NGK model in there with a 0.048" gap (vs
0.028" spec'd). Replaced plugs with Bosch F5DPOR's (Blaufernugen
$16/ea) and the problem disappeared.
FYI, you can check the plug wires resistance. Bentley says that the
wires are about 1000 ohm each, and the boot (removable from wire) is
about 1000 ohm (I'm working from memory here). Don't forget the coil
to distributor wire too.
Good hunting.

The climate control on my 90Q is not quite working right. Looking at the
archives, the missing/broken spring may be the problem with not having any
fresh air through the center vents (I'll be looking into that first).
I'm also getting less then adequate heat (air) from the floor ducts. Could
this be related to the air flap as well?

I'd guess it is the result of trying to use the same parts, year after year,
on new models. It's the same type of box on the 90 V8 as I had on the 86

redesign
costs big bucks and Audi is trying to save the $ for more interesting part

I thinks it's safe to say that your car is dumping boost
due to knock sensing, and it its doing it with the
stiffer spring, which should work OK. Adding more spring
pressure with the knob, and disabling the boost dump
feature will make matters worse. There is an underlying
problem that must be addressed. I would take out the spring
as well, and check it's performance at stock levels, then
you can start adding back in performance as you fix things.

Hi All;
Just a quick question, I recently noticed that the vibration in the steering
wheel of my VW has been caused by the race for the bottom bearing of the
steering column falling loose. I went to the junkyard to hopefully find a
cheap replacement and noticed ALL of the similar VW's had the same race
dangling by the universal joint. It's a fairly easy fix - at least it looks
to be so in the Bently, but I was wondering if this design quirk is shared
by the Audi line. Anyone out there have the bearings of their steering
shafts come loose?

Not terrible. The rears are pretty decent at the low end, and
offer almost no high, which for my application is good. The fronts
aren't bad, but I replaced them with a Polk MM component system.
> Do they good enought to work with good head-end and amplifier ?
The nice thing about doing this is that you can do it in stages.
Why not find out, since you're putting your own system in? Put
in the head unit and amp and live with the stock speakers for
a while. Maybe you'll like 'em. They're not nearly as bad as
stock speakers in other cars that I've had.

no, it's not a get rich quick scheme...
After some discussions with list members, both local and national,
it occurred to me that I have a highly valuable, hard to find Audi
part just sitting in my garage. Unfortunately, I have sold the car
that it goes to ('85 4KQ).
I have a leather seat cover (bottom) which will fit either the driver
or passenger seat of an '85 4KQ. Unfortunately, it is in a color
which is fairly rare. I had the Oceanic Blue paint with the light
grey interior - hence the color is light grey.
The seat cover has about a 1/2" scratch in it. To make a long story
short, I demanded its replacement when my insurance company wouldn't
fix other damage. The cost of the new seat cover was over $900. This
cover has less than 10K butt-miles on it as the incident happened
the first year I had it. The scratch is just that - it doesn't go
through the leather.
There weren't many of these cars in this color scheme, so it is
a long shot. If you need one, it would be nearly impossible to find
one now - it took 6 months to get back in 1985! It doesn't help me,
but it would help someone with an Oceanic Blue 4KQ w/ leather seats.
I think $200 would be fair.

Apparently the GALA only makes one shift in volume at 42 mph. They say on
the tape that you can change the speed at which it shifts the volume, but
they don't say how. Maybe the volume setting pictured above is really a
setting that changes the speed at which GALA activates. Anyone else
understand how GALA works?

According to the specs on the Audi website, you can't
get leather *or* leatherette on the 1.8T; you get the standard
velour, or if you have the sport package, the Jacquard satin

Hmmm. I do remember that when I adjusted my GALA, that there
were *two* graphical settings as opposed to just the one that
was implied in the manual. Perhaps one of them varies the
speed? I set them both on max.
