89 200TQ Boost dump

Bob,

Does your 89 200TQ have the later MC engine with higher compression
and dual knock sensors? ie after aprox VIN # 039000.

If it has the later engine with 8.4 to 1 compression and smaller
turbo then 1.9 bar is a little too much with the stock timing maps.
Been there, heard that (BTHT) -pinging

If you are running the Charlie spring mod and stock ECU boost maps the
computer just shuts off the Wastegate frequency valve because
the higher WG spring pressure allows more than the 1.4 bar boost the
computer is looking for. With the WG solenoid turned off the WG upper
chamber is then connected to the intake side of the turbo which is at
a slight vacuum at higher revs and will reduce your overall boost by
about 0.1 bar at sustained full throttle/higher RPM's.

I would be a little concerned running this way as the computer may be
changing other parameters when it goes into overboost shut down mode.
Bypassing the fuel pump ground keeps the car running even though the
computer wants to shut it off. "Kaboom" could also happen if you
have problems with your wastegate hoses or diaphram. According
to Ned at IA the turbo on the later 89 200's can make in excess of 3
bar boost at 2600-2800 RPM!

Orin may be able to comment on whether the computer is going into any
other protective mode when overboost occurs. I have not looked into
that area of the ECU code.

How many people out there are running Charlie spring mods or
some other ECU hack, Shrapnel Knobbin or pressure bleeder valve?
Send me an email directly. Orin and/or myself may want to provide
some low cost ECU mod for the people out there running with these
type of mods but who would never spend the $$ to go with the IA solution.
I don't want really want to compete with Ned at IA because I think
he provides a good mod and a LOT of good customer service for his price.
But......I kind of hate to see people run these hacks when there is a much
better way to go. Maybe I can start an "ECU club for Men"
"I'm not only a spokesperson for the product but my car
actually kicks ass with it"
