Certainly for the Mac11b (before 89.5), the computer doesn't do anything
other than control the wastegate solenoid up to the point you have excessive
boost for more than 1/2 second... at which point it cuts the fuel pump.

If boost isn't over the overboost limit, the following applies:
If the computer detects knock, it retards the timing.  When it gets to
maximum retard, then it will try to reduce boost using the wastegate
solenoid.  If this doesn't work, the fuel pump is cut.

Maybe we can negotiate with Ned to socket ECUs since that is the
part I certainly don't want to do.  Once the EPROM is in a socket,
the rest is easy.  Or I suppose I could hit the yellow pages
to find a local company that can do this job.
