Ordering a 1.8TQ Update Part III
Being home for the holidays on the south side of Chicago I finally got to
the Audi dealer that is two blocks from home. Turns out they had two 1.8t
Quattros with automatic transmission and the PSP sport package. I told
them to call me when they arrived but they didn't, don't these people want
to sell cars? Anyway, I really wanted to get the car from this dealership
cause it would be the most convenient I went in soft and slowly revealed
the extent of my knowledge on the vehicle and made the salesman realize
that I was ready to put money down today if we could arrive on a price. But
first the test drive!
I was really in a lot of traffic so I never really got a chance to do a 1/4
mile drag or anything. My main concern was winding up the 4 banger and
trying to feel the engine/driveline NVH. I was very impressed, it is by
far the best 4 cylinder engine I have ever driven. I've never driven an
Accord 4 cyl, that would probably be a good NVH comparison vehicle. Very
smooth, no, it is not a silky smooth 6 cyl, but I also have $4000 more in
my pocket. The difference was not worth $4000 to me. The car is not fast,
but it's not a dog either. I have never really had a fast car but I felt it
showed plenty of potential, especially when the manuals arrive. And of
course, in the future a chip, exhaust, and cone filter should take care of
my need for speed problems. The economy of operation at 29mpg highway, plus
the zero maintenance cost will line my pockets with money that I will later
spend on performance mods.
Sports Package Opinions:
Wow, I was amazed at what the sports package did to the interior! The
steering wheel combined with the sports seats totally improved my interior
impressions compared to the stripped downed red 1.8 I saw last week. I
really liked that jacquard interior fabric, I saw only the black interior.
Plus the quattro emblem by the glove compartment added a very nice touch.
I don't miss the wood one bit now.
I got the usual BS about how these cars are selling and they are going at
MSRP, don't expect much of a discount... Anyway when we finally sat down
at the negotiating table I just laid out my pitch, explained that I felt 5%
over invoice was fair and laid out my offer. We went back and forth a few
times, I had to explain the quattro list and http://www.kbb.com, but
finally I got the price I asked for no problem at all. They also wanted to
buy my '87 5ks with 135,000 miles, I negotiated to get rid of that
separately from the purchase price. No other dealer cared for my car at
all. When you know more about the car than the salesman does it really
humbles them a bit. Thanks to the list for that!
So my fellow Audi lovers, I am proud to announce that my beautiful silver
1.8t Quattro manual is now officially ordered. Let the waiting begin!!
