re/re fr. shock cartridges/misc

Hi all, I'm a new Audi owner, an '86 5000CD Turbo, no Quattro. This is day 3
and roadwork continues. Having checked the archives etc, I still need help
on a couple of things.

1) front shock removal.... dealers mechie sez it can be pulled from above,
car on the ground, using a 'big hollow Allen key' tool, after removing the
the shock endplate only. Is this a myth? Looks feasible from pix in a
Haynes manual, anyone want to tell me what size 'Allen key' is needed, at
least 15mm, maybe 17 or 19?? What diam is shock shaft too? I'll likely have
to make up the tool in the shop.

2) 'Given' a nice Leistreiz (sp?) rear muffler, label says 2.2l 170PS
engine, ie. my motor BUT... the rubber donut hangers on the car are at each
end of the muffler (a la Haynes) while this one has side to side hangers.
Also the 3 bolt flange is not the side I need to mate with the rest of the
system. Any takers on what this muffler will fit/how to fix it. Very
solid/thick walled muffler. Want to get it mounted but...

3) finally, hot start problem, motor spins fine but won't catch. When it
does it's quite feeble and needs some throttle to make it fire strongly.
Then runs fine. Mechie said fuel pressure regulator needed setting to
higher psi. This sound right? Is this the screw on the end of the
accumulator near the gastank. If so, how do I set/check it.

4) oops, I know.. oil line from filter mount to oil cooler is a rustball,
got a new hose, any advice on getting off the oil cooler fitting without
destroying the cooler? a torch? a Dremel?

many thanks, Tim Smith
