Wierd problem

Yup.  I don't know specifically about the 90Q, but on my urq and Audi 80s there 
are essentially separate chassis grounds for each instrument.  Look for a bunch 
of brown wires screwed to the engine somewhere - usually somewhere near the 
inlet manifold.  Check to see if they're fatigued.  It _can_ be a symptom of a 
worn engine mounting on that side of the car.
