I'm guessing the actuator rod plastic clip (if I remember correctly) snapped
off/broke off -- a relatively simple fix.  Same thing happened on my 4KQ.
 The reason your alarm still armed is because that switch is on the lock
itself (after you fix it, you can try locking the car (slowly).  You will
find that you can probably lock the car before setting the alarm, because you
have to completely turn the key to set the alarm.  At least thats how it
works on my V8.
