Thanks to all who suggested I get the rear wheels aligned..I will
definately do that in the future.
For now though it seems I have discovered the main problem..
The rear tyres on closer inspection despite having less than 5%wear and
appearing 'new' at a glance are in fact as hard as concrete!! Close
examination revealed tiny cracks in between the tread blocks  
Swapped them front to rear and whala...terminal understeer!!
 God knows how old they are but I guess its a testament to years of lack
of use in the middle eastern sun. At least its an indicator that the low
mielage low use claim is genuine!!
