Re: help-out of town friend shows up with broken Audi 90!
I'll jump in with what I hope are not erroneous possibilities.
On the lights -- looks like another entry in the headlight switch failure
lists.
On the cooling (or lack thereof) - yes, I'd look at the thermostat. Also
test for fan switch and make sure system actually is filled with coolant,
i.e. don't be satisfied just because expansion tank is adequately filled.
Any others?
