<'86 5KT>: strut shaft wear!?

Got out the old cartridge, says VW/Audi on it, from my 'new' '86 5KT.  It
showed extreme wear 6" from top end, about 2" long on one side of the shaft.
Right through the chrome, good pitting in the softer metal underneath.

So the question is... is this indicative of suspension problems such as
siezed bushings, curbsurfing?  Or simply age/usage if these are the original
10 year old shocks.  Do I need to rotate the strut shaft every two months to
avoid this???  I haven't done both sides yet.

And... any reason not to use Boge Turbo-gas, readily/cheaply avail. to me.
