force door open/get at panel

NOT the standard "how do I replace the dr. door handle" question! 
Been there before.

Finally had a chance to try out the Hakka 10s, but nooo-ooo...when I tried to
enter my car(87 5kcsTQ), the finger latch felt and sounded "normal", but the
latch only permits the door to open slightly. There's a second catch of
somekind that keeps the door slightly ajar, but won't let it open. I can give
the door a shove and it will latch completely closed, squeezing the handle
once again, partially releases it (about 1/4 inch), but unable to open any
further. Tried the interior release as well.

Also of note: The key now only unlocks the dr. door, instead of all doors. I
recall, a few years ago a rod of some kind detached itself and was easy to
fix. But how do I get the door open so that I can get the panel off?
