Just conjecture, but I'd suspect that Audi's (former) use of key-independant
radio power has more to do with mother Volkswagen's "if it was good enough
for the Beetle..." engineering philosophy and the use of a common ignition
switch architecture within the group.
As many of you know, the latest generation of Audi factory radios (the Gamma,
Delta usw. family, for the last two years) operates with and without the key.
Wthdraw the key and the radio shuts off. If you want tunes while changing
the oil or waxing the car, simply turn the radio back on manually and it will
play for an hour and then turn off automatically. It's no longer possible to
unintentionally (or intentionally) leave the radio playing indefinitely. The
"smarts" are built into the radio head and thus the feature is not available
on aftermaket radios, including those used by many Audi importers.
