Hey Dan: recruiting idea
On Friday afternoon, while walking past a branch of my bank, I saw a nice late
('85-'87) 4k in Arrest-me Red. For lack of anything better, I grabbed a
deposit envelope from the cash machine, scrawled a note on it about the list,
with my E-mail address, and stuck it under the windshield wiper. Of course, I
don't know that the owner has E-mail, or an interest in the list, but we shall
see!
Anyway, this got me thinking about my past (very successful) efforts to
recruit people for car clubs with some form of under-the-wiper flyer. When I
was in the Saab Club, I was working in the printing industry, so it was easy
to do up some nice ones. During my time in the Peugeot Owners Club, I haven't
been feeling so ambitious, but I found some tractor-feed 3x5 cards, paid a
visit to a friend who had a dot-matrix printer (I have an ink-jet printer),
and worked up simple batch and text files to print club contact info and
"Sample newsletter $1" on each one.
Seems to me Dan could write up a pitch for the list that could be printed out
in a word processing prgm on an 8.5x11 sheet, then incorporate it into an
issue of the list as a UUencoded zipfile, or make it available for download
from his Web page. I'm suggesting that Dan do it, not in a spirit of pushing
work off on him, but in a spirit of giving him control over the copy. For that
matter, the flyer could have some info on Audi-related Web pp. Folks with
ink-jet printers could run off a single copy at home, then make xeroxes that
wouldn't run in the rain.
Of course, not every flyer recipient would have E-mail, but that's the chance
we'd take, and it might bring some people one step closer to getting E-mail.
My experience suggests that a well-written flyer will attract the right kind
of people.
There are some (not serious) technical issues that would need to be resolved
(PC vs. Mac, which WP file format to use, 8.5x11 vs. A4 paper), but I won't
beat these as-yet-unborn horses just yet! Thoughts?
