Fuel level gague going south

I hope this is not a redundent post, but recently I received responses 
to a post about my dead auto system check display, airbag indicator 
going off intermettently and sometimes dead temp and fuel gague all  
probably being caused by a bad ground on my circut board, or the circut 
board itself.  

Well the past two days, my fuel gague is doing different things.  It 
now won't go past the half way mark and about 50% of the time is 
reading dead empty.  Previously it may have been dead, but would always 
wake up and go show a correct reading.  Is this an indication of my 
fuel gague really being a seperate problem not having to do with the 
circut board or bad ground?  Could it be the "thing" in the tank which 
reads the level of fuel going bad?  From all the responses, it looks 
like my sometimes dead temp gague is a bad multi function switch.
