Dan,
Sorry to take so long responding to this. The question refers to a short
article in AutoWeek magazine, November 4, 1996 issue, p. 7. What they said
was:
"The first A4 1.8Ts in the United States come with five-speed automatics,
followed in early 1997 by the five-speed manual, which we drove. We found
none of the driveline shudder that, upon clutch engagement, often accompanies
the V6-powered A4 and A6."
I read this to mean clutch engagement when first getting underway, but I
suppose it could refer to engagement after high-rpm gearshifts (the problem
described on the list). For what it's worth, my '97 A4Q with about 2400
miles doesn't seem to do either one.
