Oil Filter Media

As much as I hate to see this go on again, the thread has raised my
curiosity again.
Apparently, we have a lot of folks performing surgery on oil filters to
look at the amount, thickness, style etc of oil filter media. What I'm
hearing mostly, unless I missed it, is about the "amount" of media in the
filter. I'm curious as to whether we have any folks out there that know
about the quality of the media as opposed to the quantity of media. I'm
guessing that you could filter oil with an oil filter filled with sand,
coffee filters, old shop towels, marbles, or a really splendid media that
would filter down to the nth micron. I am using an OEM filter now because
of the drainback valve, but I can't help but wonder if the media itself
inside is as good as the FRAM Wear-guard's which blew away all comers in
the "micron" test in Consumer's Reports. As an aside, there is a Ferrari
show every year at the transportation museum in Brookline, Massachusetts
and almost every single one from the California Spyder to the 400i's are
all sporting FRAMs. So does anyone out there ...maybe our listers with the
SAE... know about media QUALITY? I'm only a little concerned about more
than a few of our merry band disecting filters in the dark corners of our
basements and garages in the wee hours of the morning ;-)....you guys are
my heros.
