No, neither could I. A lot more happens to oil in use than particle
accumulation. Especially in a turbo, I'd treat 10k as an absolute upper
ceiling.
OK - we're both wimps!

Elementary? Immature? Perhaps, but you've decribed just what I've been

Seeing the amount of interest the thread about rally sims generated when it
ran last year, this deserves our support!

I've seen this before on my cars. Sometimes, the water will wash around
some of the oil-laden crud in the engine compartment. Some of it lands
on a heated area, and will take a couple of days to burn off. I don't
worry about this. I have enough to worry about :-)
See if you can localize the smell inside the engine compartment.

Well, after asking the list and watching the responses, you should
be able to get a new A4Q for $900-$1500 over invoice, which makes
the used one only $2000 less than a new one. I'd buy new.
Last time I bought a 10k mile car from a dealer, it was my first
20VCQ. It was in 1990, it was a 1990 model, and it was a VoA demo,
you know, all those bigwigs that get a company car.
Anyway, the sticker was $32k, I paid $21k, 35% off MSRP.

I just picked up on this thread. My 86 Coupe was doing the same
recently. Started good, idled okay and cruised okay. But it
stuttered real bad on accelleration. I did all the standard stuff,
new plugs, cap, rotor, wires (all overdue anyway) and looked for
vacuum leaks on the manifold (the usual suspects!). NOthing! While
replacing the no. 5 plug I had to move the crankcase vent tube to get
to it. When I touched the tube the 3 in. rubber hose connecting it to
the crankcase vent just disentegrated. It was the consistancy of
silly putty. I replace it with a section of 3/4" hose and everything
works again.

My (or rather my wife's) Avant is no more.
Frances (my wife) found a back road in Chipping Campden which hadn't been
gritted, skidded on some snow-covered ice and whacked a Cotswold stone wall
with one of the rear doors. It made a complete mess of the door, pushed in
the rear quarter panel an inch or so and pushed in the sill underneath the
door by about six inches. The car wasn't comprehensively insured. Cost to
repair: GBP1200; value of car after repair: GBP800. B*******!!!!!
I'm now looking for another Avant.
Has anyone any ideas on how to get the most money out of this situation (the
car still drives very well). I had the auto gearbox reconditioned 5000
miles ago - also the engine is in excellent condition. Frances has
forbidden me from dismantling it in the drive, but if anyone on the list (UK
only obviously) wants to buy it for spares, e-mail me.

Many thanks to all of the great threads on fixing broken seat heaters.
This morning on the way to dropping the car at the dealership for a good
allignment; I had nice warm buns! I took some pictures during the
process and if they come out I will post them on my web page for
reference for other people. One thing I can say is, what a serious pain
in the *ss getting those seat covers off the frame! BuI am very happy
that it works now.
Since I am once again keeping my car due to a lack-luster credit history
(my own damn fault); I am changing the setup of the stereo. I would like
to run an external amp to a new set of rear speakers. I would like to
know what the proceedure is for removing the side panels to the center
console so that I can get access to the back or the radio, and put a
backstrap on it. The passenger side seems to be the best bet for running
the cabling back to the trunk. Does anyone have any specific expertise
on preventing alternator/Turbo whine from getting into the system via an
external amp? All advice here is appreciated.
Sorry for the band-width.

Steve,
Do you or anyone else know where this is located on the 200 (mine is a '90).
I have always had noisy fuel pumps on this car (2) and somewhat of a skip
in the idle. When I changed the pump the second time, the screen and tank
were extremely clean. I am hoping that I've got this other filter and with
a 130k, it might be the answer to a few problems.

.. I'm pretty sure that I've got one on the '88 5kQ. I wouldn't necessarily
worry about changing it that regularly as long as you are using quality gas.
If you do decide to change the filter I'd recommend running the tank as close
to empty as you dare to maximize the amount of crud in the tank that gets
sent to the filter. There is also a screen at the inlet to the pump as well,
if you're in there changing the filter you might want to make sure that the
screen isn't clogged too ... the word I've heard is that having a dirty
screen/prefilter can contribute to noisy fuel pumps and premature failure ...
The only related problem that I've had was that my '78 Fox GTI has a screen
inside the fuel tank. I was having a problem where the engine would stumble
and lose power under acceleration when the tank got below 1/4. I replaced
the screen and resolved the problem ... the interesting thing is that upon
visual inspection the screen did not appear to be clogged ...
