If Ford did with the SVO, it probably wasn't to reduce the load/increase the
performance but to get the thing to live ... I have a number of friends with
SVOs and they all carry spare alternators whenever they go out of town
because of their high failure rate!  Apparently, it wasn't designed to spin
at 7000rpm!
