Underseat "ducts"

Do any of you know what the plastic duct-like objects are that emerge 
from the rug under the front seats of my 88 90q?  They look like 
heater air ducts, but I've never noticed any air output.  If they are 
described in the Bentley manual, I haven't come across the 
description.
