oil consumption

A US quart is very nearly a litre (0.95)

A litre every 5000 kilometres is high. I have zero measurable loss between
changes (at 8000km) after 143k miles of driving like a maniac in a 1988 ur-
quattro - but then I warm the engine up first and change the oil regularly. It
depends if the engine is a known or unknown quantity (i.e., bought new or used)
and whether the consumption is increasing. It's too much for the simple trivial
stuff like valve stem seals, and it's really enough to be affecting the
emission values.

The key question is: is there an emission symptom? A burst of smoke at
startup? A puff when changing gear? Or when engine braking? Get someone to
drive behind you with the engine hot.

If it was _my_ engine, I'd fit a separate mechanical oil pressure gauge via
a T-piece off the stock position on the lower left side of the engine block.

As an aside - someone posted about filter change intervals on A4s being twice
the oil change interval. That's how it _used_ to be with German service on
Audi 80s in the early 1980s.
