Quantum trans

My '84 Quantum GL5 wgn has a 3sp auto that acts poorly below freezing.
Can someone tell me if my symptoms are normal.
If it's really REALLY cold (-0 degrees or less), at first it won't
even move, unless it's rev-ed to about 3.5k. As though it were
frozen, the engine strains expectantly, the car just doesn't move.
This attitude lasts about 5 sec. or less. Then it seems to slip
(2nd gear-ish rpms, w/ 3rd gear-ish pull) for another two or three
minutes, alternating between this goofy behavior and normal operation
for no particular reason. Always before I've been moving for five
minutes or so, it has settled down and acts as it should.

q. 2, to any listening Quantum wgn owners, Is the power locks vac pump
actually IN the tail gate? Those wacky germans!
