Subject: Pulling to right '93-95 90 Quattro

My younger brother has a '95 90 Quattro that has pulled to the right since
he bought it 15 months ago (it had been sitting at the port for some reason
and he got a great deal because it was the previous model year). Before he
bought it, I told him to specifically ask if it had been damaged in any way
and if there was any mechanical reason it was sitting in the port. The
dealership assured him it was not damaged, for what that is worth. He also
discovered the pull within a week of delivery after ruling out improper
tire pressures, etc and the dealership assured him they'd take care of it.

During the ensuing months, he has been through the mill with the dealer,
and among other things was told the alignment is within spec and there is
nothing more to be done.

To the point: In asking around informally, he has heard that the pulling
problem is not entirely uncommon and asked me to check with the experts in
such matters - my fellow listers. Does anybody know of such a problem with
the '93 - '95 90 Quattro sedans? Much appreciation in advance.

Subject: How to set idle on '87 5KCSTQ (Long)

OK, I got the Bentley manual on my car, and I'm STILL uncertain
what that screw, needle valve adjustment or whatever it is on the
front of the intake manifold is called! (Idle speed adjuster?)

I do know it greatly affects the idle speed of the car when I turn
it. I've done this with the green terminal wire on the coil
disconnected.

Is there a way I can correctly set the idle speed with this screw
without needing to disconnect crankcase breather hoses and owning
the VW 1367 tester Bentley talks about? Anyone know how many
approximate turns this screw should be set at?

I know it is not set correctly now because ever since I began
messing with it (mistake) I've lost performance when I stomp the
accelerator.

I also occasionally get idle speed variation when at a stop light
from 1000 to 3000 rpm, other times idle climbs to 3K rpm and stays
there. Doesn't happen all the time, though. (Idle stabilization
valve?)

Other than these minor and intermittent irritations, the car runs
great!

Any suggestions/comments appreciated.

Well I took my rotors in to be turned and they are below spec (DAMN). The

Does anyone know a good (CHEAP) source for Audi rotors, and better yet,
anyone know where I could find some drilled or slotted rotors for the Couope

Yeah, I just flash *everyone*! OK, not really, but it oughtta be illegal to
drive in traffic with a pair of 100w lights on your bumper aimed *at* the
oncoming cars. (I encountered two tonight) Ooooooh, a sore spot! Hard to
have a sense of humor and forgiveness on that one. But seriously, you're
right. My truck has a pair of Bosch (?) 7" lights with normal wattage H4's
and they must be the euro pattern because there is this beautiful sharp line
limiting the low beam illumination. Opposing traffic doesn't even enter it
until the last half second or so. Wish everybody had them.

John, I had a similar experience with my 86 5KTQ. The dealer said that
Audi specifies that you replace the entire prop shaft assembly. That is
why the $1000 cost. I talked to another dealer that was a little larger
than the dealer I usually went to. They told me that they had found a
bearing (sorry, don't happen to remember the part number) that would
work as a replacement. They had done this on both 4000 and 5000
quattros. I left the prop shaft with them and drove the car for a day in
front wheel drive while they replaced the bearing. They put the unit
back in and it worked great. Total cost of about $150. The dealer who
had the info on the bearing was: Valley Imports in Fargo, North Dakota.

"CD" certainly predates 1986. I sold a 1982 80CD last year.

Also, I think the "CS" trim level over here (they're very rare) is lower than
the "CD" trim level.

Years ago, in Germany, I drove an "80S" for a while. It had no carpets (just a
rubber composition sprayed into the footwells), no cigar lighter, no radio, no
clock, no courtesy light, and no fog lights.

Subject: Audi TT

Just received an elaborate, artsy 20-page sales catalog (show catalog?)
printed in German and English on the Audi TT coupe. Both the catalog
and the car are dramatic, to say the least. The idiosyncratic styling
manages to be simultaneously retro and avant-garde. To me it's
intriguing and immensely appealing. But I'm not entirely convinced
prospective buyers will share my view. With the likes of BMW,
Mercedes-Benz and Porsche introducing technically competent but
more mainstream designs, I can't help wondering (and hoping) there's
room for Audi in this segment of the marketplace.

Specs for the TT include the 150hp 1.8 liter turbo engine, 5-speed
manual transmission and, of course, AWD. 0-100km (approximately
0-62mph) acceleration is listed at 8.0 seconds, top speed at 140mph.
Vehicle weight is 2694lbs. This sounds roughly competitive with a
4-cylinder BMW Z3 (which may be speed-limited in the U.S.), but the
Z3 doesn't display anything approaching the attention to detail lavished
on the TT, nor does it enjoy the estimable benefits of AWD. Also, the
TT is at least nominally a 2+2.

What do others on the list who are acquainted with the TT think of its
styling? Of its likelihood of success? Audi's pricing policy certainly
may be a determining factor. Does anyone know how much they go
for?

I still have the elaborate German language A3 catalog I offered to swap
a while back. If anyone is interested, please contact me directly. And
thanks to jazman for his episodic thriller on Audi's '86 Commemorative
Design series. Great stuff!

No, the specifics of the problem were in relation to a incorrectly installed
rear shock (sold by, but not installed by, Ivor). When Todd Candey and I
went to reset the "koni adjustables" we found a moron with a impact wrench
had overtorqued the spring cap nut. The hex shaft broke below the nut, and I
called the competitor, and advised him of the problem, and further advised
him NOT to continue, in the interest of safety (One Lap is a track to track,
bogey time Lap, rally this past year). His call to Ivor got him the advice
to keep running, for that I disagreed, that safety call by phone could have
proved deadly. I found that on the reckless side, tho I've also seen Ivor
drive.... To Ivors credit, he did find an application replacement within 2
days and had it shipped to a free zone stop in KC...

I'm sure it's a different design but I removed the airbag wheel from my 200q
without any problems ... believe it or not, but I just followed the
directions in the Bentley manual. (And, Yes, when the time came to remove
the wheel from the car, I DID stand off to one side, just in case...)

BTW, has anyone else converted their airbag-equipped car over to a MOMO?
The combo switch in my '89 200q was of a different design than the one in my
'87 5k and while the hub adapter itself fits, the horn doesn't work. I
temporarily solved this problem by having an adapter machined to fit but it
squeaks and I haven't been able to solve this ... since my combo switch is
starting to show signs of needing replacement, I've been wondering if the
early-style switch from a non-airbag 200q will work instead? I've checked
with MOMO and they list but one hub adapter for these cars, and the guy I
talked with clearly didn't want to discuss anything that had to do with
removing the airbag ... guess the lawyers have them scared pretty well!

Any advice will be appreciated ... and spare me the lectures about airbags.
I've researched this topic quite thoroughly (been following it since I
started engineering school 18 years ago) and am comfortable with having made
the decision to remove the one from my car...

Well, if you want to look at it in the sales-pitch view (like comparing
bhp number), look at what A4 provides that Neon does not -- 5-valve per
cylinder; turbo (which means a lot easier performance boost); virtual
steering that almost eliminates power steer tugging game; AWD; really cool
pop-up headlight washer; 16-inch wheels; and last and not least -- four
rings fore and aft -- which means you're not meeting one of the same copy
every 2.5 minutes.

On the other hand, if you're me-too kinda person, go for Neon.

Pulling is a very common problem with the 90s of this generation, the front
drive cars all the more so. There is a long litany of technical bulletins
and service procedures. If he has not received satisfaction from the dealer,
he should go up a level to the regional Audi contact. The dealer will (must)
provide the name.

A quick question: Has the dealer ever been able to make the problem go away,
even temporarily? Quite often a good alignment works, but then things
gradually deteriorate.

My personal experience with Die-Hard is not good. I come from a long
history of North American and Japanese vehicles (before I saw das licht),
all outfitted with Die-Hards. There may have been a time when they were a
premium battery, but IMO that time is long past, and they are now resting
on their laurels with a second-rate product. Especially evident here in
the harsh northern climes.

The worst part of it is, that like Sisyphus, once you invest in the first

cash to replace the soon to be defective battery for a pro-rated new one
until you "Die", or you throw away it's exchange value and pop for a

Just my opinion.
