Have the same question. My 86 4KCS Q has 220K on it, replace the struts at
~90K and the car still is tight and holds the road well.
I did read an article in the Quattro Club Quarterly that boldly stated that
any of the cars with >=100K needed to have the springs replaced. That
seemed a bit assertive, but I've not seen any indications of poor handling.
Given metal fatigue and age, I'm assuming that the springs have lost some of
their strength, but it hasn't impacted handling or height in a way that I can
detect. Of course the changes are probably gradual, so hard to notice unless
something major happens.
