urQ: Sunroof mechanism problems

It looks like the lifting mechanism for the sunroof on the '83 urQ has 
a problem.  The crank rotates without moving the mechanism at all.  This
is one of the simple mechanisms that just tilts up the back end of the 
sunroof, it does not roll back into the roof.  I'd appreciate hearing 
from any of you that have had to deal with this problem ... is it likely 
to be something localized to the crank mechanism ... or am I going to 
have to tear into the whole thing?  TIA!
