Re:Subject: Windshield Pitting Suggestions

You might try a product such as Rain-X or such. That can fill the pits to a
certain degree, and might help the situation. It will be temporary, and will
need reapplication, if found to be worthwhile. Unfortunately, the entire
glass itself would need to be buffed to remove the pitting, were you to go
that route. It can be successfully done for wiper arcs and such, provided
they aren't too deep. But when it comes to an entire windshield, the labor
becomes quite involved. It also has to be considered that the possibility of
creating distortion is also present when such an extensive area is involved.
The surrounding, unpitted glass must be removed to the depth of the pits
themselves. It is very difficult to not create a lens that is somewhat like a
funhouse mirror. Even though a scratch/pit is small in area, like body work
it must be feathered/blended in. And then it really should be just about
optically exact, or not done at all. So, I'd suggest trying a surface
application, such as suggested above. Your insurance might help out, but
maybe not if it's an 'accumulated' loss. If the damage were to have happened
during one event, it might be covered. (I've seen windshields/cars
sandblasted when left parked at the end of a dry paved lot for just one windy
day). If you go with new glass, certainly shop around, the markup is quite
high. Unfortunately, I only repair and don't replace, so I couldn't help you
with that, but might be able to come up with a reference or one of our
franchises near to you that might be able to buff it or help find a
replacement shop.
