Hello Steve.
What about trying this:
Put car in neutral with handbrake on.
Jack up one side of the car (both front and rear).
Use chocks to prevent the car moving and then release handbrake.
Lock the centre diff - check green light is on - rotate a wheel if
necessary.
Mark position of both unlocked wheels with a bit of chalk.
Rotate one wheel exactly 10 revolutions.
If your ratios are right, then the other wheel will also rotate exactly 10
revs (allow a small error (+/-10degrees) for transmission slack. If this is
the case, then tyre diameter differences are probably responsible for your
problems.
If you have a 4.1 on one axle and a 3.9 on the other, then the other wheel
will do 9.5 or 10.5 revs. If this is the case, you can start swearing.
If you have different ratios on front and rear, then you will always be
working the centre diff, even when going straight, but only by a small
amount, a lot less than driving with the steering on full lock. It should
be able to cope - it might help to give it regular oil changes. However,
you can never lock your centre diff.
Interesting!
