It would seem better to measure from center of hub to bottom of wheel well.
I think this would eliminate the factor of varying wheel, tire, inflation
configurations.

I agree, the hub to wheel well distance should be constant and eliminate a
lot of variables.  Maybe if I post again someone will reply?  Again I was
curious about early 80's coupe ride heights, I know a few of you have them. 
Mine sems low to me in the rear but some corroborative data would be nice. 
Measure with full gas tank as a standard....
