Re: P.O.S. Yeah right.
Interesting story's of the "timing belt horror".
Steve Eiche summed it up well by reafirming what every "experienced"
Audi
mechanic knows. The right tools make or brake the job! Plus knowledge
of the job's
"pecularities" is a must.
Granted, Audi's are not "childs play" when it comes to repair.
However they ARE in a class above several other make's of auto when it
does come to
"ease of maintenance"! Try 2.5 hours changing spark plugs on a
certain Chrysler product! One cannot just hap hazerdly go out to do
an "extensive"(timing belt)
maintenance task, without prior training/experience, and not expect
problems.
As a certiried Aviation Mechanic, I had to train for almost 3 years,
before I was
"certified/licensed" to complete specific maintenance tasks, and sign
off the
associated paper work as "safe for flight". Then I went for Flight
Engineer!
Experience, knowledge, and patience are a MUST, when tackling a job
such as the timing belt r/r. The Q list harbors several sources for
this procedure, and often
gives less experienced people a false idea as to the extent of
involvment for this task! Those who have tackled the timing belt r/r
probably find the job fairly "straight foward" and after completing
it, probably rather easy! This "image" is portrayed in our posts, and
people get the wrong idea about the jobs complexity! Thinking such a
job is easy, the less experienced mechanic, will leap right in, and in
a short time.... we all know the rest of the story! Seen it many
times! Been there many times! This is where you must be patient and
keep your cool!
Plus a Bently or other publication comes in handy! Its well worth the
price, and pay's for it self, the first time you use it!
