They're about as hard to replace at the struts themselves.  You have to
compress the spring, and remove the top of the strut.  I'm not sure if you
can do all this without disassembling the lower strut where it connects to
the hub.

As the bearings wear, they clunk around up there when you hit big bumps and
the noise is transmitted rather well around the body.  I'd do them any time
the struts are replaced.
