Re: Dash lights

Not too hard; I've done this twice. Biggest question, though, is why all
of these are blowing out so soon after each other.

In any case: I will assume you don't have an airbag
1) Disconnect battery ground strap
2) Pull off horn pad
3) With wheel in straight-ahead position, unbolt wheel and remove.
4) Remove steering column switch cover by using Phillips head
screwdrive in sloted hole in bottom of cover; angle screwdriver up
at about 45 Degree angle (aimed towards steering column) to engage
screw on pinch bolt. Loosen screw and pull off switch cover with switches.
5) Just behind this cover you'll see two screws at the bottom of the
instrument cluster. Remove them.
6) you can now tilt the cluster to the rear of the car, remove the various
plug-in harnesses and remove the cluster.
7) Bulbs are 1/4 turn screw-in style at the back of the cluster; there are a
ton of them!
8) Parts manual lists the following part nos.
    Black base bulb: 1.2 W 893 919 040
    Green base bulb; 2.0W 893 919 040A

When retorquing, wheel, torque to 30 ft-lbs

Good luck!

I have a 1989 Audi Quattro model 90. Facing the dashboard,
the right half of the dashboard lights went out while I was
driving this morning. So the speedometer and the gas gauge
are both out. I noticed for some time that one or two of
the speedometer light bulbs?? were out, and then one or two
more went out. Finally this morning, both the speedo and the
fuel gauge went out. I hope this is making sense. All
 info. is truly appreciated.

 My questions are:

 (1) Is this unusual for this to happen??

 (2) Are these those little bulbs that can be replaced?

 (3) How difficult/easy is it to remove the dashboard and
 replace these bulbs??.

  Thanks in advance.-------------Tony.
