 4-foot pipe on a 1/2" breaker bar, and exerting precisely 64.5 lbs/ft
of torque at the pipe tne using my calibrated biceps....math may not
have been my strong suit, but I know that a few pounds +/- isn't
 gonna make that bolt break.)

Ok, but whacking a bolt with that kind of torque (it's 258ft lbs a couple of
feet from the bolt), I'd sure want the EXACT socket, not denying a 1 1/16
won't work, you can repair an audi with all SAE sockets if you really wanted
to. The point is, if you plan on doing any of these projects again, spend
some time to outfit the toolbox with the correct toys.... None of this stuff
is really that expensive (specialty tools the exception). That old adage:
"Do it right the first time," pretty much guarantees a second chance to just
doing it. Looking at that front bolt, I'm not sure I'd want to be the one
explaining to ANYONE why I had to buy a new crank cuz the bolt is hacked...
I used to wrench just to make things work. As I get older (and wiser to
mistakes), I find less breaks and more correct work is done with the correct
toys in thy hand. A great excuse to pamper oneself with a 10$ socket....
Critical components on an audi should get nothing less than proper treatment
from the doctor in you.
