TQC Master Cylinder Rebuild

Folks,

Just spent some of the President's holiday redoing the brake gizmos in the
engine compartment. It was not as diffficult as I thought it would be.

The Master Cylinder rebuild kit from Audi is very expensive. However it is
complete with valves and seals all pre-assembled in a plastic tube. Just slide
it out and replace the old stuffing. (After cleaning out the accumulate goop
from 13 years of use. The aluminum cylinder barrel showed no signs of wear. In
fact the rubber seals looked pretty good also.

Then decided to go after the rear bias valve assembly. Spent about 20 minutes
grinding down a socket to fit the hex head screw in the body. Then a few taps
with an han d held impact driver and out came the guts of the prportioning
valve.

Then used a modified cold chisel to expand the metal reatining cap for the sring
assembly. Off it came and one circlp later I had the guts of the other valve
mechanism out. Took about 40 minutes to clean the various parts and valve body.
Then repainted the body and re-assembled everything. Lots of crap in this
assembly but bores looked clean.

Will now drop back in to the car and see if my soft pedal has gotten any
stiffer.

I recomend this procedure to those of us with high mileage vehicles. It took
some time but brings some good peace of mind.
