You're oh-so-very correct. It takes a precise stimulus to elicit the
response. I helped them out actually by waiting until I could make it
happen "at will". I specified the precise conditions down to the stretch
of road two blocks away from the dealership, the traffic lane, speed, etc.
They can now replicate the noise.

The big question is, what will it turn out to be? The headliner's out, all
electrical assemblies are disconnected, etc. It's flat gutted and it still
makes the noise. I'm convinced they'll find and remedy it, I'm not entirely
sure that it will be before my upcoming ski trip...
