It depends.  What are you trying to achieve?

Yup.

IMO totally unnecessary.  It's no barrier to a determined thief - your own 
disassembly is showing how easy it is to overcome.

In the microfiche, it's an "unbedingt", i.e., a "must do".  It was in the 
very first draft of the "preliminary" manual in 1980.  Lots and lots of people 
don't, however.
