Re: Wiring remote locks to Central locking system
I integrated an after-market alarm with remote control into my 4000Q.
I think the power lock system on a 4000 is different from a 5000, but
here's what I did.
There is no vacuum motor in the driver's door, but there is a SPDT
switch in it. When you stick the key in and lock or unlock the door,
that puts the switch in one of it's two positions, which feeds to the
vacuum pump, and operates the other doors and the trunk accordingly.
So, what I did is, I installed an electric servo motor in the driver's
door, which I connected to the alarm's door lock output (using
appropriate relays, etc.). Now, when I arm the alarm, using the key
chain remote, it locks my driver door, and when I disarm it, it
unlocks my driver's door.
OK, what about the rest? Well, here's the fun part. I wired that to
work with the "trunk release" button of the after-market alarm on the
key chain remote. But, such an output is typically a low amperage
ground for about two seconds. Remember, the switch in the door is
SPDT. So, what you do is, get a latching relay and wire that to the
momentary ground contact for the trunk release. I also put a
momentary contact switch in my dash, so I can open the other doors
without the key chain remote. For greater VW-Audi authenticity, the
headlight relay out of a 72 to 79 VW bus (this is no joke) is the
PERFECT latching relay for this job.
I hope I've given you some ideas for your project.
Chris

Fellow Audi fanatics,
I have a Clifford alarm system in my 1987 5kcdq which has remote locking
capabilities. I was wondering if anyone has ever wired remote locks to the
factory system, if so, could they give me some pointers.
