Re: Handbrake not working - calipers out - rear brake out??
In a message dated 97-02-20 10:38:15 EST, you write:
<< My hand brake just stopped working, and according to a
mechanic, the rear calipers are "stuck", and need to be
replaced.
I did not think much of it, since everything else (including
normal brake) was working ok.
But now I am wondering, what does "calipers" stuck mean? >>
It means money !
How much money?
ALL of the money. Absolutely ALL of it, bring it all, don't leave any at
home.
The brake cables attach to these funny levers that "mechanically" apply the
rear brakes whenever you use the brake lever. When they seize, they don't
release when you release the lever. They then drag... akin to driving with
your
foot resting on the brake pedal.
If the cables only are at fault consider yourself blessed.
If the rotors are "blue" from glowing in the dark... they have to be
replaced, and you are still blessed.
If those funny levers that pivot in the caliper housing are at fault, the
caliper
must go, ( see above coments pertaining to money ). If anyone has ever found
an effective way of freeing them up forever, I for one would be grateful.
