RE: S4 chipping
Hi Jeff, I own a stock S4 '94 which I want to "chip up". How can you
describe the change in the cars behavior?
Clearly I can only give my subjective view of my car as I have never driven
another S4. Didn't even test drive before I ordered it in Jan 94 and then
waited 3 months for it to be made and shipped from Ingolstadt. Never owned an
Audi before but I knew this was the car for me. In the factory form it is a
bloody fantastic car and I did 40k in 2 years all over Europe. Last April I
retired and took the car with me. Now I thought how to take it further and I
had always been interested in Chipping. Looked at both Superchip and Starchip
the two who advertise in the UK but was not impressed with Starchip's local
dealers and I did not want some dirty fingered oik poking around uninformed in
my pride & joy. So I settled on Superchip, the local guys knew all about the
20v 5pot and do a lot of work tuning racing cars, the facilities were 1st
class including a full 4 wheel rolling road with all the gizmos. Ordered it
all and about 4 weeks later it went to be fitted. Stayed to watch and the only
bit I didn't like was the rolling road test which scared th s**t out of me.
The result:- well before the car was very quick, its the computer controlled
auto version, and doing about 24mpg. After the chip the car is bloody quick
and the major difference is 0 to 60 and mid range acceleration up to about 120
which you get to awfully fast. It now does about 20/21mpg but nothing for
free. Have never taken any times but you do have to be careful or you're
racing towards 130+ before you know it. For me, & my wife, its turned a very
fast safe saloon which is both comfortable and fun to drive into the same but
now with superfast performance when you want it. Also by the way I only use
the big alloys and Goodyear F1's in the summer, for the winter I use German
winter tyres on steel wheel which are only rated to 100mpg but work really
well in snow, ice etc. I speak from experience in saying the big fat F1's are
hell in snow and only good fortune saved me from a collision with my drive's
stone wall last Nov when early snow caught me out . Had the winter wheels
fitted the very next day!!
Sorry if that's all a bit of a 'crie de Coeur' but hope it gives you some
insight into why I did it, never questioned the decision.
Regards Jeff
PS I don't use the S4 for every day use now only high days, holidays and long
journeys, locally use a Landcruiser and in the summer a Honda Rebel so the S4
will only do about 5/6K per year but they are good miles :-)
