Slow Starting Problem (87 5KCSTQ)

i'm back to lurking on the list after a 6 month forced break
(no college = no free internet access)

i've had a nagging slow start problem with my 5000 since day one. here's
the lowdown:

slow start warm or cold ( ~10 seconds) unless just shut off and restarted
(within 5 minutes) or super super cold (-15 or so)

the engine is an MC turbo

i replaced the valve on top of the fuel pump that prevents back flow - no
change

i did a fuel system preesure check, everything to specs.

i switched the temp sensers around to see if one was bad - no change

i pulled the cold start valve and did the check from the manual to see if
the computer (in diagnostic mode) could fire it. it works perfect.

checked the wiring from the temp sensor to the computer plug in - good.

let the car sit, pulled the fuel pump relay and jumped the terminals and
let the fuel pump run for ~30 seconds and then tried to start it. no
difference, slow start.

the cold start valve does not seem to be firing when the engine is turned
over. i beleive it should pulse a little regardless of the temp with more
pulses the colder it is.

any ideas anyone ??? TIA

tom
