The 1982 Coupe does not have the close-ratio 5-speed. The 5th gear in that
car is wonderful for highway cruising, though (something like 70mph around
2500rpm, where mine pushes 3200rpm @ 70mph).
I believe Audi switched to the "Coupe GT" designation for the U.S. 1984
model year. All earlier cars were just labelled "Coupe", all subsequent
cars called "Coupe GT". AFAIK, the regular "Coupe" used the snowflake-type
rims and body-mounted foam spoiler, while the "Coupe GT" used the multispoke
Ronals and raised rubber/vinyl-coated spoiler.
It is a trip to walk around Austin Veedub, a local wrecking yard. They
have something like 15 Coupes, I think one of every model year. Definitely
a boon for my family... :)

'85 Coupe GT, mine, 5-speed close-ratio mit Ronals
'82 Coupe, father's, 5-speed wide-ratio mit snowflake alloys
'87 Coupe GT, brother's, 5-speed close-ratio mit Ronals
