Same goes for my '88 80. I always thought it was due to the green plastic
ring in the filler neck, preventing the wider nozzles used for leaded fuel
from being used. My idea was that it stopped the air in the tank escaping
while you were filling up, because there was not enough room around the
fuel nozzle. It's certainly a pain in the b*tt, filling up with the full 68
litres takes more than 15 mins (as opposed to less than half that for most
cars). So this is not a bug, it's a feature? Hmmm....
