FWIW, I recently installed (a couple of months ago) a dual-thermo temp alert
that tells me the temp inside and outside of the car. It is very small, and
has a digital display of both temps. It has an "alarm" feature that tells
you once it gets into "icy temp" range.
I mounted it on top of the steering column (thank you Audi for making a flat
topped steering column...), right in front of me. It does not block any
gauges or anything. A perfect place for it.
I bought it (actually asked for it as a Christmas present, heh, heh...) at
Brookstone (i.e. specialty/gadget store) for $20. It has a wire lead with a
temp sensor on the end, for the outside temp. They recommend putting it out
by the front bumper. It wouldn't reach all the way out there on mine ('cuz
of where I was mounting it), so I put in down near the lower ledge of the
driver's side door jamb. This has seemed to work rather well (i.e. no heat
from the engine, or wind-chill factor, etc.).
I tried putting it closer toward the front of the car, and it was picking up
too much engine heat or direct sunlight heat. Where I have it now seems to
work just fine.
Hope this helps. This may be a viable alternative for you, instead of
spending the big $$ to get one in a package from the dealer.
Good luck.
