The 1984 Coupe GT did use the shorter ratio 093 gearbox but still  
had the cable clutch.

Definetley not.
The Coupe has the 093 type box while the quattro uses the 016 type 
box.016 is a 5000 gearbox with a hollow output shaft to accomodate 
the center differential neccesary for the four wheel drive arrangement.  
It is also identical (except for gear ratios) as the mighty Turbo 
Quattro Coupe box.  The 093 box does not share any common parts with 
the 016.
