You're not kidding. I live sorta in the sticks in NW New Jersey,
where I regularly get to test my ABS coming home at night. I
probably shouldn't admit this here, and will possibly get flamed
a bit, but: when I'm driving home on the backroads late at
night, I regularly take the entire road and split it... that
is, I drive with my car centered on the double yellow line.
Within the limits of how far I can see ahead in case another
car wants to use the same road, of course. But this gives me
a little extra cushion, should something decide to jump out into
the road.

Had a really bizarre sighting a few months ago. Something
jumped out, slammed on the brakes. 15 feet in front of my car,
a mouse had darted across the road, chased by a fox. Both stopped
dead in their tracks in my headlights for a long second, almost
a scene out of a cartoon. The mouse then continued his dart across
the road, and the fox was *very* confused about what to do...
