I don't know that Usenet has got *that* much worse, except that robots
are scanning all the articles for mail spam targets. And alt.* groups
*still* have poor distribution, after all these years.
One option would be a set of "private" newsgroups, which would be
carried by only one or two news servers, and automatically gatewayed
to/from the mailing list. This means less exposure to spam robots, but
yet a more convenient (to many people) access mechanism.
The quattro list has grown enormously since its humble beginnings, and
the mailing list is indeed busting at the seams. Besides the newsgroup
idea, there is also the possibility of splitting into separate lists for
different models and/or topics (there could also be a "total" list that
gives you all the articles from all sublists).
But this is Dan's list now, and he's got to decide what an acceptable
solution is -- or even that the best solution is no solution. :-)
